Which Should You Wear: Traditional Braces or Invisalign®
According to recent studies in the United States, up to 65% of the population requires some form of orthodontic treatment, but less than 15% actually receive assistance. The field of orthodontics focuses on treating issues of dental and jaw misalignments and malocclusions. These problems are common around the world, as the human jaw does not accommodate the number of teeth the average person possesses. A variety of other factors also contribute to misalignment, including childhood behaviors like sucking on pacifiers or one’s thumb.
When it comes to receiving orthodontic treatment, patients often fear the reaction of their peers. While braces are a dental necessity for many, individuals still worry about how they will be perceived and whether the treatment is worthwhile. However, there are numerous benefits to having traditional braces, just as there are to wearing a trendy alternative like Invisalign®.
What Is the Different Between the Two?
Traditional braces are typically made of metal and wires. Metal brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected with wires that can be tightened to apply consistent, gentle pressure. Over time, the brackets correct misalignments like overbites and underbites.
Invisalign®, on the other hand, consists of multiple clear plastic aligners custom made for an individual’s bite. The aligners apply gentle pressure as well and can be used to correct minor alignment problems. They can also be removed at any time and do not require tightening appointments.
The Pros of Each
While traditional braces have a bad reputation, they are extremely efficient and effective. The brackets can be tightened and adjusted as needed and are great for treating moderate to severe alignment issues. They are also more affordable than a trendy option like Invisalign®, which is often more expensive because insurance companies view the aligners as being more cosmetic.
Invisalign®, meanwhile, comes with its own benefits. The aligners are clear, so no one can see when somebody is wearing them for orthodontic treatment. The aligners can also be removed, making it easy to clean the teeth underneath. Finally, there are no painful tightening appointments and no metal to cut the inside of the mouth.
The Cons of Each
Each form of orthodontic treatment also comes with cons. For traditional braces, many older patients often feel awkward about wearing the brackets because they are quite visible. The tightening appointments can also be painful, and it is difficult to clean the teeth. Patients also have to avoid goods like gummy candy and caramel.
With Invisalign®, the greatest problem is that the aligners only work for people with minor alignment issues. Almost no one else can wear the aligners, and the treatment is not as effective as traditional braces. They are also more expensive.
Whether or not a patient decides to choose traditional braces or Invisalign® will depend on their needs and the input of their dentist. Some people work well with Invisalign®, but patients with moderate to severe orthodontic problems might need to stick to traditional braces.
