Keep Smiling Through Dental Discolouration
Tooth Colour Whitby
Tooth discolouration is a common occurrence that is not only keeping Canadians from smiling, but impacting overall self-esteem. From the foods and beverages we choose, to the oral hygiene habits we’ve developed, to simply aging, our teeth slowly lose their brightness over time. This doesn’t have to be a permanent situation and with intervention from our Downtown Whitby Dental team, you can show off your pearly whites once again.
There are three main types of discolouration that our clients experience throughout various life stages; and they each have typical fixes associated with them. Let’s take a look.
Surface Stains (Extrinsic)
Surface stains are typically associated with the lifestyle choices we make. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are some of the most damaging substances to our teeth. The pigments from these substances build up on the surface of the tooth over time, diminishing the overall whiteness of the tooth.
The Fix: Typically, surface stains can be reversed with regular dental cleanings, increased attention to oral hygiene, better food and beverage choices, quitting smoking and teeth whitening for the more stubborn stains.
Stains Below the Surface (Intrinsic)
When the pigment from certain substances makes its way below the tooth surface, that is what we call intrinsic staining. Often, we see discolouration below the surface when there has been trauma to the tooth at any stage of life or too much exposure to fluoride in childhood. Fluoride discolouration is not a concern once the tooth enamel is fully formed. Often certain medications, such as high blood pressure medications or antihistamines, and medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can cause intrinsic staining.
In rare circumstances, patients may have been born with a rare condition called dentinogenesis imperfecta, which results in a natural grey, amber or purple-hue to the teeth.
The Fix: While often harder to reverse at this stage, there are options to restore a whiter, more brilliant smile to our Whitby patients. We look to tooth whitening, and in more pervasive situations, crowns or veneers.
Tooth Colour Whitby – Age Related Stains
As we age and our enamel thins, we often notice a more yellowish-hue to the teeth. That is absolutely normal and typically not concerning. Aesthetically there are steps our dental team in Whitby can take to restore your smile.
The Fix: We recommend looking to crowns and veneers as simple tooth whitening will not be effective at this stage, nor recommended due to the thinning enamel.
Tooth discolouration can happen at any stage of your dental care. With a strong commitment to oral hygiene, most discolouration can be slowed or even reversed. If you are concerned about yellow or greying teeth, let’s talk to make sure we get to the root cause and create a plan to restore your smile.
