Family Dentistry Whitby

From Babies to Seniors… Dental Care for All

We could really replace the words “family dentistry” with “preventive dentistry” as that is what our Downtown Whitby Dental team focuses on during your regular family dental visits. While creating a nice, white smile is the result, our experienced and friendly team is also highly focused on helping you understand the “why” behind good oral hygiene at every age and stage of your life.

Research shows that the adoption of strong oral hygiene practices and an overall healthy lifestyle are strong factors in delaying or preventing dental decay and periodontal disease as we age. A collaborative approach between you and your dental team is the best approach to ensure the most proactive and effective dental care possible.

Family Dentistry Whitby – Dental Visits at Every Stage

Every life stage has its own unique dental care concerns due to the phase of tooth development and typical lifestyle changes. Here’s a look at dental concerns and focus at every age and stage:

Babies: At this early stage it’s really about teaching mom / dad / caregivers how to best take care of baby’s gums and teeth for best success. Discussing gum cleaning habits, diet, proper use of bottle, etc… will help guide baby to their next stage with a strong start.

Children: Developing strong oral habits at a young age will help our kids carry over those habits into their teen and adult years. Teaching proper brushing and flossing techniques; creating a positive experience between dentist and child; discussing the impact sugar has on their teeth are all important conversations that we have with children and parents at this young age. We know that kids mimic their parents, so we also talk with parents about modelling good oral hygiene as well.

Teens: Teens have different dental concerns, mostly due to their rapid growth and hormonal changes. We’ll discuss topics such as braces, third molars, facial appearance and bad breath with teens (and their parents) as they transition to adulthood. We’ll also discuss the role a healthy diet plays in good oral health as we know that kids are often making poor food choices. We can’t guarantee that they will listen, but it’s been our experience that as kids age they tend to care about their oral hygiene a little more with every passing year.

Adults: Habits are set and now we start talking about dental care and your overall health. Looking at oral cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular health, our Downtown Whitby Dental team will take a proactive approach to your overall health care. Plus, we start discussing and looking for any periodontal and gum disease, common as we age.

Seniors: As we age we have different concerns when it comes to our oral health. Gum disease, tooth and root decay, sensitivity, diabetes and dry mouth are just some of the conditions that we watch for and manage.

If you haven’t yet booked your next regular visit, we’d love to hear from you. Having a regular cleaning is an important step in overall dental wellness. It is at these visits that our Whitby Dental team can identify any concerns and challenges we might face, and create a treatment plan moving forward. We look forward to hearing from you.
